ENGLISH PORTFOLIO

This year was very good, I learned so much new things but I know i still have a long way to go.  I want to thank my teacher Ana Antônia that was our mentor through the year, the one that guides us into this journey of education.  I hope that by the end of the course, I could improve my level in reading and writing, but mostly I want to improve my speaking.

Listening in English is so important as writing and reading. Is the ability to accurately receive and interpret messages in the communication process. Listening is key to all effective communication. Without the ability to listen effectively, messages are easily misunderstood. As a result, communication breaks down and the sender of the message can easily become frustrated or irritated. One of the best ways to improve your listening skills is to listen music in English. Exercise 5 – Don’t Stop me Now We listen to music in class. It was the song Don’t Stop Me Now by Queen. It was a very cool time in class, I enjoyed a lot. This activity helps because we needed to listen carefully to the song, to find what word fits in the right spot in the lyrics. Reading in english is an excellent way to expand your vocabulary. If you are the type of person who likes to read the newspaper with your coffee in the morning, then read a newspaper in English. If you love to read, pick up your favorite book and challenge yourself to read it in English. If you are still new to English, you can start by reading something easier, like an online book or even a children’s book. Everyone has to start somewhere. Exercise 3 – English File – Pre-intermediate Student’s Book - Unit The Student’s Book is the best option when we talk about reading. It has a lot of funny and interesting texts, that aren’t difficult to read and always teach us something. Here I bring the most interesting text in the book, in my opinion. Knowing how to write in english is very important because it opens you to a lot of new content! And there are several ways to improve your writing. You can start by making notes in english instead of Portuguese, for exemple, when you go to the supermarket, try to make a list of what you need to buy in english. Writing can help you visualize word and its meaning. Many times when I couldn’t remember a word I needed, I would think back to when I wrote it down, and I would picture the word in my notebook. It’s a great way to practice writing and a useful way to remember new words too! These exercises helped me to improve my writing and comprehension in english. Well, of course that I want to say, "I don't know my future", but I will make an effort. 😅 After 10 years in contact with English, I know that I still have a lot of to learn. I want to improve my vocabulary and my grammar. Giving classes are helping me with that.  Something that I've realized is that pronunciation is extremely important in the process to learn a new language. It helps with the confidence to talk and express yourself. My boyfriend and I are planning to finish the major and go abroad to do a master. We want to continue to study and to become better teachers. Meanwhile, we still have to finish our third year. Hope you've enjoyed this portfolio!

Something that I find very good from Ana Antonia's classes is that she tells us to always talk in English. That helps so much since we can't practice English in too many places. Every activity we have to discuss with each other our opinions and interests. I can't remember a class that I didn't speak English. One example from those activities is a discussion about the text "For a Five-year-old". We had to learn some creepy crawlies vocabulary and then we had to discuss which one do we kill and which do we protect. It was interesting to talk about my opinion and to listen to my colleagues.

As I said before, I don't usually write in English. So, when the teacher told us to do a text about "A Rush of Adrenaline", and then a colleague would correct the mistakes, I was like "no teacher, I don't want to do that!" Turns out that I really like it and I know that most of my coleagues like it too. It was an oportunity to train how to correct our student's activities. That type of activity also made me see that I needed to stop underestimate my friends' capacities towards English. Amanda did my text's correction and she was excellent doing it. We even discussed the use of many words and we learnt very much with each other. Great experience! Another great and new thing that happened to me was that I had to write an article for the first time and present it in EPI (Encontro de Professores de Inglês). You can learn a lot in one year of English course, even If you're already familiar with the language. Of everything that we did, there was a particular class that helped me with something that I'd never fully understand. The infamous Present Perfect. I really liked the teacher approach. Ana Antonia is always super calm and patient and she likes to present new ways of learning for us. To teach that verb tense she used the Student's book but also used really nice youtube videos. Then she made us form sentences and talk to the class. I felt like I really understood how to use Present Perfect for the first time. Until today, I have good thoughts from this. Another activity that made me think about my knowledge was a test on Irregular Verbs. I had to study hard to do it because I have bad memory. After the test I was able to remember every rule that I've learnt so many years ago and had forgot. I did the test on last October and all the things that I relear...

We wanted to do something new and funny, so we decided to go to a water park called “Thermas Dos Laranjais”. This water park is one of the biggest in Brazil. At first, we needed to make a 2 hours travel to get there, once it was in another town. But then, when we got there, it has a huge line to enter the place. It wasn´t a great time waiting in the line. But, when we entered the water park it was amazing! If I thought that the line was huge, I didn´t know what was waiting for me inside. Hello! My name is Nataly and I'm 21 years old (The most cliche sentence ever!). I'm really happy that you're reading this portfolio. I usually don't write in english so never mind the little (or big) mistakes. I am a English and Portuguese student at UFMT. I'm also a english teacher at Inglês sem Fronteiras; Something that I'm really proud of because I'm teaching in a Federal University.  My first college year I decide to not watch English 1 with teacher Ana Antonia. When I started to give classes at Inglês sem Fronteiras, I realized that I needed to start watching english classes again. Best decision ever!
